The Rangers have claimed 28-year old outfielder Nick Gorneault off waivers from the Angels. He played in 2 games for the Angels last season and he was 0 for 4 with a run scored. Gorneault was 123 for 471 (.261 avg, .783 OPS) last season in AAA and he scored 82 runs, cranked 19 homers, drove in 59 runs and stole 17 bases. This was a low risk/decent reward move by the Rangers.

The Rangers appear to have gotten nice returns for Mark Teixeira and Eric Gagne at the trade deadline. Switch-hitting 22-year old catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia played pretty decent for the Rangers and he appears to have a bright future. In 46 games for the Rangers, he was 42 for 167 (.251 avg, .721 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 7 homers and 21 RBIs. 26-year old outfielder David Murphy was blocked in the Red Sox system but he swung a good bat after coming over to the Rangers in the Gagne trade. The lefty swinging Murphy played in 43 games for the Rangers and he was 35 for 103 (.340 avg, .916 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 2 homers and 14 RBIs. Lefty starter Kason Gabbard was up and down for the Rangers. The 25-year old started 8 games for the Rangers and he was 2-1 with a 5.58 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. In 40.1 innings he allowed 40 hits, walked 23 batters and whiffed 26. Look for all three of these players to have key roles for the Rangers in 2008.
