The Texas Rangers have designated DH/OF Jason Botts for assignment

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 29 April 2008 at 6:36 pm

The Rangers decided that they have seen enough of Jason Botts for now. Botts played in 15 games this season for the Rangers and he was 6 for 38 (.158 avg, .699 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. Botts also whiffed 18 times already this season which has likely led to the end of his career with the Rangers. Botts doesn’t make big money so the Rangers might be able to get something for him. The Rangers have recalled 25-year old switch hitting Brandon Boggs from AAA ball. The outfielder has played in 18 games in AAA this season and he was 21 of 68 (.309 avg, .824 OPS) with 12 runs scored and 6 RBIs.

The Texas Rangers place Hank Blalock on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 29 April 2008 at 6:33 pm

The Rangers have placed starting 3B Hank Blalock on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn hamstring. Blalock is 26 for 87 (.299 avg) this season with 9 runs scored, 3 homers and 7 RBIs. Ramon Vazquez and German Duran will probably split time at the hot corner while Blalock is out. Vazquez has played in 10 games this season and he is 5 for 26 (.192 avg, .631 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 1 RBI. Rookie German Duran is not off to a good start to his major league career. He has pitched in 6 games this season and he is 1 for 10 (.100 avg, .282 OPS) with 1 run scored. The Rangers have called up Chris Shelton to replace Blalock on the roster. He will likely platoon at first base with Ben Broussard. Shelton is a 27-year old righty swinger. He has played in 14 games in AAA ball this season and he was 17 for 48 (.354 avg, 1.054 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 3 homers and 18 RBIs.

The Texas Rangers have released Adam Melhuse

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 25 April 2008 at 10:31 pm

The Rangers have released catcher Adam Melhuse who currently has a broken bone in his hand. He played in 8 games for the Rangers this season and he was 4 for 20 (.200 avg, .473 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. The Rangers have recalled C/1B Jarrod Saltalamacchia to replace Melhuse on the roster. Saltalamacchia has played in 15 games in AAA ball this season and he was 16 for 55 (.291 avg, .882 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 2 homers and 13 RBIs. Saltalamacchia will be the backup catcher and he will also get some playing time at first base as Ben Broussard has struggled so far this season.

The Texas Rangers place Luis Mendoza on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Friday 25 April 2008 at 10:28 pm

The Rangers have placed righty starter Luis Mendoza on the 15-day disabled list with a inflamed right shouler. Mendoza has started 3 games this season and he is 0-2 with a 9.31 ERA and a 2.59 WHIP. Mendoza has allowed a whopping 18 hits and 7 walks in only 9.2 innings this season. The Rangers will likely call up 32-year old righty Sidney Ponson to take Mendoza’s place in the starting rotation. Ponson has pitched in 5 games (4 starts) in AAA ball this season and he is 1-2 with a 3.47 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Ponson has now pitched in 259 games (245 starts) in his major league career and he is 82-101 with a 4.94 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Don’t expect miracles out of Ponson as he hasn’t been a good pitcher in quite some time in the majors.

The Texas Rangers walk on the wild side when they call on German and Benoit

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Friday 25 April 2008 at 7:17 pm

The Rangers need Franklyn German and Joaquin Benoit to start throwing strikes. Both of these guys have great stuff but it won’t matter if they continue to walk batters as often as they currently are. German has pitched in 9 games this season for the Rangers and he is 0-0 with a 0.82 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. German has only allowed 6 hits in 11 innings this season but he has walked an amazing 10. His ERA will rise very soon if he can’t get the ball over the plate. Joaquin Benoit has not been near as lucky as German has. He has pitched in 9 games this season for the Rangers and he is 1-1 with a 7.56 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP. Benoit has only allowed 7 hits in 8.1 innings this season but he has also walked 10 batters. The Rangers can’t afford to let Benoit pitch late in games if he can’t get the ball over the plate.

Kevin Millwood is off to a great start for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Friday 25 April 2008 at 7:12 pm

This is the pitcher the Rangers thought they were getting when they signed him to a multi year contract three years ago. Millwood has started 5 games this season and he is 1-2 with a 2.53 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Millwood should already have 3-4 wins this season but he’s run into bad luck. The Rangers either haven’t scored for him or the bullpen has blown his leads. Hopefully Millwood can overlook the things he can’t control and he keeps pitching well.

The Texas Rangers place lefty starter Kason Gabbard on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Friday 25 April 2008 at 7:09 pm

The Rangers have placed lefty starting pitcher Kason Gabbard on the 15-day disabled list with a sore back. This hurts the Rangers bad as Gabbard has been the teams’ second best starting pitcher so far this season. Gabbard has started 4 games for the Rangers this season and he is 1-0 with a 2.18 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Gabbard will be replaced in the rotation by righty Scott Feldman who has been recalled from the minors. Feldman has started 1 game for the Rangers so far this season and he is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. If Feldman can impress in his next couple of starts he might get to replace either Jason Jennings or Luis Mendoza who are both off to awful starts to the 2008 season.

The Texas Rangers place Dustin Nippert on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 22 April 2008 at 9:53 pm

The Rangers have placed righty reliever Dustin Nippert on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right foot. Nippert has pitched in 6 games this season and he is 1-2 with a 16.62 ERA and a 3.12 WHIP. Nippert has allowed a whopping 19 hits and he has walked 8 batters in only 8.2 innings. The Rangers have recalled fireballing righty Frank Francisco to replace Nippert in the bullpen. Francisco has pitched in 8 games in AAA-ball this season and he was 0-0 with 5 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP. He has whiffed an amazing 16 batters and only allowed 3 hits in 9 innings. Francisco has also pitched in 112 games in his major league career and he is 6-3 with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. He has 115 whiffs in 118 innings which shows what kind of nasty stuff he has.

The Texas Rangers need more from the back end of the starting rotation

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Monday 21 April 2008 at 10:22 am

The Rangers are currently in last place in the American League West with a 7-12 record which has them 4.5 games behind both the Angels & A’s. Part of the reason for that record is the awful performance they have gotten out of Jason Jennings and Luis Mendoza. Jennings seems to have lost a lot of velocity off his fastball which has been topping out at about 87 miles per hour. He has started 4 games this season and he is 0-3 with a 7.08 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. Rookie righty Luis Mendoza has been even worse than Jennings so far this season. Mendoza has started 2 games this season and he is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.38 WHIP. The Rangers might consider putting Jamey Wright into one of the rotation spots in question, but he’s been really good out of the bullpen so far this season. In 8 games out of the pen this season, Wright is 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.

Josh Hamilton is off to a good start for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Monday 21 April 2008 at 10:17 am

Josh Hamilton has been everything the Rangers thought he would be an more so far this season. Hamilton leads the Rangers in hits, homers and RBIs so far this season. In fact, he’s the only Rangers hitter in double figures in RBIs so far this season. Hamilton has played in 19 games so far this year and he is 23 for 77 (.299 avg, .905 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 4 homers and 17 RBIs. The most amazing thing about Hamilton is that he has only whiffed 8 times this season. The sky is the limit for Hamilton this season.
