Taylor Teagarden is falling out of favor with the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Sunday 13 July 2008 at 6:53 pm

24-year old righty swinging Taylor Teagarden was the Rangers’ #4 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook. But, he has been passed up by Max Ramirez who was brought up from below Teagarden in the minors to replace the injured Gerald Laird. Teagarden has played in 64 games in AA+AAA ball this season and he is 48 for 219 (.219 avg, .719 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 8 homers and 21 RBIs. He has really looked overmatched at the plate this season as he has whiffed 71 times this year. Teagarden better get his act together soon or he might fall too far behind the other catchers in the Rangers organization.

Do you actually follow the Rangers or just look at some stats and hack up an opinion? Published fact: Ramirez was brought up when Laird got hurt and the day before Laird got hurt, Teagarden suffered from a sore shoulder which kept him out of AAA games for 5 days. Injury, not falling out of favor with the Rangers, drove the Ramirez call up.

Would the Rangers, Teagarden and every Ranger fan like to see him hit better? Of course, his 238 average in AAA just isn’t good enough. Tell me though who in the organization calls a better game, throws out more attempted base stealers, and has the best pure catching mechanics?

The fact is, the Rangers are bringing him along at his own pace and don’t want to rush a thing. True catchers are a rare breed these days and many folks in MLB have an eagle eye on Teagarden. If he stays healthy, he will be in the bigs and soon. If the Rangers give up on him as you’ve speculated straight from your sphincter, then look for the Yankees among others to be standing in line as trade partners. Patience.

Dbat, maybe the Rangers should look to move Teagarden in a trade for some pitching before this season goes down the drain. He is a good prospect but he needs to produce and that is a fact.
