Ian Kinsler goes 30/30 for the Texas Rangers in 2010

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 30 September 2009 at 6:27 pm

27-year old righty swinging 2B Ian Kinsler turned into a 30/30 man this season for the Rangers. He has played in 139 games for the Rangers this season and he is 139 for 550 (.253 avg, .815 OPS) with 97 runs scored, 31 homers, 85 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. The sky is the limit for Kinsler who just needs to stay healthy (which he has for the most part this season) to realize his full potential. The Rangers would probably be better off to hit Kinsler lower in the order to take advantage of his power.

Elvis Andrus of the Texas Rangers should get a lot of votes for Rookie of the Year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 30 September 2009 at 6:25 pm

21-year old righty swinging shortstop Elvis Andrus should get a lot of votes for the American League Rookie of the Year. He played in 140 games for the Rangers this season and he is 124 for 463 (.268 avg, .700 OPS) with 71 runs scored, 6 homers, 35 RBIs and 32 stolen bases. The upside of Andrus is huge as he proved he could handle major league pitching this season. He is also a solid defensive player who will likely team with 2B Ian Kinsler as the Rangers’ double play combination for a long, long time.

The Texas Rangers shut down Josh Hamilton

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 30 September 2009 at 9:53 am

The Rangers have shut down 28-year old lefty swinging CF Josh Hamilton for the season. He played in only 89 games for the Rangers this season and he was 90 for 336 (.268 avg, .741 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 10 homers, 54 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Hamilton was solid when he played this season but that wasn’t often enough. Still his pace was nothing compared to the numbers he put up last season for the Rangers. Hamilton played in 156 games for the Rangers last season and he was 190 for 624 (.304 avg, .901 OPS) with 98 runs scored, 32 homers, 130 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Luckily for the Rangers they have a couple of capable replacements in Marlon Byrd and Julio Borbon.

Justin Smoak is a player on the rise for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Sunday 27 September 2009 at 12:16 am

22-year old switch hitting 1B Justin Smoak was the #3 rated prospect in the Rangers’ minor league system coming into this season according to Baseball America. He played in 106 games in Rookie+AA+AAA ball this year and he was 112 for 386 (.290 avg, .853 OPS) with 58 runs scored, 12 homers and 57 RBIs. The Rangers might give him a shot next spring to win the starting 1B job.

Marlon Byrd is having a solid season for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 22 September 2009 at 8:05 pm

32-year old righty swinging outfielder Marlon Byrd has taken advantage of the injuries in the outfield for the Rangers. He has played in 136 games for the Rangers this year and he is 145 for 513 (.283 avg, .797 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 17 homers, 79 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The Rangers would be smart to re-sign Marlon Byrd as a lot of teams will likely have an interest in him.

Julio Borbon is shredding the baseball for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 22 September 2009 at 8:03 pm

23-year old lefty swinging outfielder Julio Borbon has exploded on the scene for the Rangers. He was the Rangers’ #9 rated prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. Borbon has played in 33 games for the Rangers this season and he is 36 for 112 (.321 avg, .823 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 4 homers, 16 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. The power is new as he didn’t hit for much power in the minors but he has speed to burn.

The Texas Rangers shut down Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 16 September 2009 at 11:51 pm

The Rangers have shut down 24-year old switch hitting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the season. He will undergo surgery next Monday for thoracic outlet syndrome. Saltalamacchia played in only 84 games for the Rangers this season and he was 66 for 283 (.233 avg, .661 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 9 homers and 34 RBIs. Salty also whiffed 97 times this season which is way too many for a hitter like him. Salty has now played in 238 games in his major league career and he is 198 for 789 (.251 avg, .703 OPS) with 100 runs scored, 23 homers and 93 RBIs. He has whiffed a stunning 246 times in his major league career to date. I’m starting to think that Saltalamacchia will never live up to his “potential” as he has not improved one bit from the day he became a major leaguer.

Neftali Feliz has been lights out for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 16 September 2009 at 5:44 pm

21-year old righty reliever was one of the key players the Rangers got from the Braves in the Mark Teixeira trade and he’s been showing why. Feliz has pitched in 14 games (0 starts) for the Rangers this season and he is 1-0 with 2 saves, a 1.46 ERA and a 0.57 WHIP. Feliz has only allowed 10 hits in 24 2/3 innings for the Rangers while whiffing 32 batters showing how downright nasty his stuff really is. The most amazing thing about Feliz is his control as he has only walked 4 batters this season. Look out for this guy as he will either be the closer of the future for the Rangers or they will put him in the starting rotation.

Darren O’Day has been quite a find for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 16 September 2009 at 5:24 pm

26-year old righty reliever Darren O’Day has been outstanding since he came to the Rangers. The Mets and Angels are going to wish they never gave up on this guy. O’Day has pitched in 55 games (0 starts) for the Rangers this season and he is 2-1 with 2 saves, a 1.84 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP. He has only allowed 29 hits in 49 innings for the Rangers this season while he has whiffed 50 batters showing how good his stuff is. How could those other teams pass up on a guy like O’Day?

Texas Rangers Josh Hamilton out with pinched nerve

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by Andrew on Friday 11 September 2009 at 9:26 pm

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is out at least a week longer with a pinched nerve in his back.  He has now missed seven games in a row and received his third root-nerve epidural injection today.  Hamilton has been on the disabled list twice already this season and this is not good news for the Rangers, as they are right in the middle of a wild-card race.  Currently, the Rangers are two games back of the Boston Red Sox for the AL Wild Card and are also missing their All-Star third basemen Michael Young with a hamstring pull.  The only good news is that Young should be back soon as he took batting practice and did some running in the outfield today.
