The Texas Rangers acquire Jeff Francoeur from the Mets

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 31 August 2010 at 10:33 pm

The Rangers have acquired 26-year old righty swinging outfielder Jeff Francoeur from the Mets for 25-year old infielder Joaquin Arias. Francoeur has played in 123 games for the Mets this year and he is 94 of 398 (.236 avg, .663 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 11 homers, 53 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. He has now played in 829 games in his six years in the majors and he is 837 of 3,140 (.267 avg, .733 OPS) with 393 runs scored, 99 homers, 453 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. The Rangers hope that Francoeur will be able to give them a solid bat off the bench in September. The Rangers won’t miss Arias as they had designated him for assignment last week.

The Texas Rangers need Nelson Cruz to stay healthy the rest of the year

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 31 August 2010 at 7:56 am

David Murphy did a good job while Nelson Cruz was out of action but the Rangers need Cruz to stay healthy the rest of the year. Cruz has played in 77 games this year for the Rangers and he is 90 of 281 (.320 avg, .968 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 16 homers, 64 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. He gives the Rangers another big time weapon in the middle of the batting order and I think Vladimir Guerrero misses him when he’s out of the lineup.

The Texas Rangers place Frank Francisco on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 29 August 2010 at 4:48 pm

The Rangers have placed 30-year old righty reliever Frank Francisco on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his right side. Francisco has pitched in 56 games (0 starts) so far this year and he is 6-4 with 2 saves, a 3.76 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He has whiffed 60 batters while only allowing 49 hits in 52 2/3 innings this year as despite losing his closer job he has still pitched well overall. The Rangers have recalled 23-year old lefty Derek Holland to replace Francisco in the pen. Holland pitched in 7 games (5 starts) earlier this year for the Rangers and he was 2-2 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. He has whiffed 26 batters in only 28 1/3 innings this year so I think he has the stuff to excel in the pen.

The Texas Rangers have a couple of youngsters pitching well out of the pen

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 26 August 2010 at 9:16 am

24-year old lefty Matt Harrison and 26-year old righty Alexi Ogando have pitched so well that it stretches the bullpen if the starters run into trouble. Harrison has pitched in 25 games (6 starts) for the Rangers this year and he is 2-1 with 2 saves, a 3.76 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. But as a reliever he has been outstanding. In 19 games as a reliever for the Rangers, Harrison is 1-2 with 2 saves, a 2.18 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. He gives the Rangers a second quality lefty in the pen to team with Darren Oliver. Ogando is a flame thrower. He has pitched in 27 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 3-1 with a 1.24 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He has only given up 18 hits while whiffing 30 batters in 29 innings so far this year showing just how nasty his stuff has been.

The Texas Rangers DFA Joaquin Arias

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 24 August 2010 at 10:46 pm

The Rangers have designated 25-year old righty swinging infielder Joaquin Arias for assignment to make room on the active roster for Alex Cora. Arias played in 50 games for the Rangers this year and he was 27 of 98 (.276 avg, .637 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 9 RBIs and 1 stolen bases. He played in 91 games in his four years with the Rangers and he was 65 of 227 (.286 avg, .701 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 19 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. I have a feeling that Arias won’t be clearing waivers.

UPDATE: (8/31/2010) - The Rangers have dealt Joaquin Arias to the Mets for Jeff Francoeur.

The Texas Rangers activate Matt Treanor from the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 23 August 2010 at 5:05 pm

The Rangers have activated 34-year old righty swinging catcher Matt Treanor from the D.L. Treanor has played in 64 games for the Rangers this year and he is 41 of 182 (.225 avg, .656 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 5 homers and 23 RBIs. To make room on the roster for Treanor the Rangers have demoted Taylor Teagarden to AAA. Teagarden has played in 21 games for the Rangers this year and he was 8 of 56 (.143 avg, .625 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 4 homers and 6 RBIs. Treanor will back up Bengie Molina the rest of the year.

The Texas Rangers activate Rich Harden from the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 23 August 2010 at 4:53 pm

The Rangers have activated 28-year old righty starting pitcher Rich Harden from the D.L. Harden started 15 games earlier this year for the Rangers and he was 4-4 with a 5.45 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. The Rangers hope that Harden is a lot better this time around. To make room on the roster for Harden the Rangers have placed 27-year old righty Scott Feldman on the D.L. with a bone bruise in his right knee. Feldman has pitched in 25 games (20 starts) for the Rangers this year and he is 6-9 with a 5.43 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.

The Texas Rangers sign Jesus Colome

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 18 August 2010 at 2:00 pm

The Rangers have signed 32-year old righty reliever Jesus Colome to a minor league deal. Colome pitched in 12 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Mariners and he was 0-1 with a 5.29 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. He has now pitched in 341 games (0 starts) in his 10 years in the majors and he is 19-27 with 6 saves, a 4.69 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. This was a good signing for the Rangers as they are stocking up for September.

The new guys have not made as big of a impact as the Texas Rangers had hoped so far

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 17 August 2010 at 10:49 pm

Lefty starting pitcher Cliff Lee has had more than his share of bad luck so far for the Rangers. He has started 8 games for the Rangers this year and he is 2-3 with a 3.44 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. He has 58 whiffs and only 4 walks in 65 1/3 innings for the Rangers as he is pounding the strike zone. But the Rangers’ D and offense have let him down so far. That could change at any time with the way Lee is pitching right now. Bengie Molina has been spotty with a bat in his hands so far for the Rangers. Molina has played in 30 games for the Rangers and he is 21 of 93 (.226 avg, .616 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 11 RBIs. The Rangers expect more out of the bat from him the rest of the way. Jorge Cantu hasn’t shown any power yet for the Rangers. He has played in 10 games for the Rangers and he is 9 of 30 (.300 avg) with 3 runs scored. Christian Guzman is on the D.L. and he was awful before getting hurt. Guzman has played in 10 games for the Rangers so far and he is 3 of 34 (.088 avg, .227 OPS) with 2 runs scored. The track record of these four players tells me that they are going to turn things around soon.

The Texas Rangers need Julio Borbon to pick up the pace

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Tuesday 17 August 2010 at 10:44 pm

Expectations were high for 24-year old lefty swinging CF Julio Borbon after the rookie season he put up in 2009. Last year, Borbon played in 46 games in which he was 49 of 157 (.312 avg, .790 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 4 homers, 20 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. This year has been a different story for Borbon as he has struggled some. He has played in 96 games for the Rangers this year and he is 81 of 300 (.267 avg, .656 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 3 homers, 27 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The Rangers would like it if Borbon got hot so they could use him in CF all of the time.
