The Texas Rangers are sending a trio of players to the All-Star Game

33-year old righty swinging outfielder Nelson Cruz, 26-year old righty starting pitcher Yu Darvish and 38-year old righty closer Joe Nathan have been selected to the A.L. All-Star Team by manager Jim Leyland.  Cruz has played in 85 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 88 for 320 (.275 avg, .865 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 22 homers, 67 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Darvish has pitched in 18 games (all starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 8-4 with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.  He has given up 84 hits and 41 walks while whiffing a major league leading 157 batters in his first 119 1/3 innings this year, which is impressive.  Nathan has pitched in 40 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 1-0 with 29 saves, a 1.40 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP.  Nathan has only given up 20 hits and 10 walks while whiffing 40 batters in his first 38 2/3 innings this year, which is impressive.

The Rangers are sending seven players to the American League All-Star Team. 30-year old righty swinging catcher Mike Napoli was elected by the fans to start behind the plate in his first ever All-Star Game. Napoli has played in 69 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 53 of 226 (.235 avg, .773 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 12 homers and 30 RBIs. 33-year old righty swinging 3B Adrian Beltre was also voted in to start for the A.L. All-Star Team. Beltre has played in 76 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 95 for 294 (.323 avg, .883 OPS) with 45 runs scored, 14 homers, 52 RBIs and 1 stolen base. This will be Beltre’s 3rd All-Star Game in a row (the only ones of his career). 31-year old lefty swinging outfielder Josh Hamilton was also voted in to start by the fans. Hamilton has played in 73 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 88 for 280 (.314 avg, 1.023 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 25 homers, 73 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. This will be Hamilton’s fifth All-Star Game in his five years with the Rangers. 23-year old SS Elvis Andrus and 30-year old 2B Ian Kinsler have been selected as reserves for the A.L. team. Andrus has played in 77 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 94 for 306 (.307 avg, .794 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 1 homer, 32 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. This will be his second All-Star Game. Kinsler has played in 78 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 93 for 337 (.276 avg, .786 OPS) with 61 runs scored, 9 homers, 40 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. This will be Kinsler’s 3rd All-Star Game. 26-year old lefty starting pitcher Matt Harrison was picked to his first All-Star Team. Harrison has pitched in 16 games (all starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 11-3 with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. 37-year old righty closer Joe Nathan will be making his fifth trip to the All-Star Game so far in his career. Nathan has pitched in 34 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 0-2 with 18 saves, a 1.87 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP.

UPDATE: (7/6/2012) – 25-year old righty starting pitcher Yu Darvish will also be heading to the All-Star Game as he won the fan vote. Darvish has pitched in 16 games (all starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 10-5 with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.
