The Texas Rangers lose Colby Lewis at least the next two months

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Thursday 23 June 2016 at 5:56 am

The Texas Rangers with be without 36-year old righty starting pitcher Colby Lewis for at least the next two months due to a strained lat muscle.  Lewis has pitched in 15 games (all starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 6-1 with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.  He has given up only 81 hits (13 homers) and 19 walks while whiffing 61 batters in his first 98 innings pitched so far this year.  This is a huge blow to the Rangers, as Lewis has been pitching the best of his Major League career in 2016.

The Texas Rangers have placed 29-year old lefty starting pitcher Derek Holland on the 15-day disabled list due to left shoulder inflammation.  Holland has pitched in 14 games (all starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 5-5 with a 5.20 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  He has given up 78 hits (10 homers) and 25 walks while whiffing 43 batters in his first 72 2/3 innings for the Rangers….so he was getting hit pretty hard this year.  The Rangers have called up 24-year old righty reliever Luke Jackson to replace Derek Holland on the pitching staff.  Jackson has pitched in 5 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Rangers and he was 0-0 with a 7.04 ERA and a 1.96 WHIP.  Jackson has now pitched in 12 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Rangers and he is 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP.

Sam Dyson has been incredible for the Texas Rangers

28-year old righty reliever Sam Dyson has been awesome for the Texas Rangers since arriving in a deal with the Marlins on July 31, 2015.  Dyson has pitched in 69 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Rangers and he is 3-2 with 16 saves, a 1.60 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP.  Dyson has pitched in 38 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 1-1 with 14 saves, a 1.98 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP.  Dyson has taken over as the closer of the Rangers and he’s isn’t looking back.  The Rangers hope that Dyson keeps rolling along!

The Texas Rangers have acquired 25-year old lefty swinging 3B Kyle Kubitza from the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.  Kubitza came into this season as the Angels’ #16 prospect according to Baseball America.  Kubitza played in 54 games in AAA-ball for the Angels this year and he was 47 of 186 (.253 avg, .714 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 2 homers, 19 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Kubitza played in 19 games for the Angels last year in his first taste of the show and he was 7 for 36 (.194 avg, .451 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.  Any time you can get a legit prospect for a wad of cash, you have to do it.  So I like this deal for the Rangers.

The Texas Rangers have signed 36-year old lefty reliever Neal Cotts to a minor league deal.  Cotts has pitched in 21 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Yankees and Angels this year and he was 0-0 with 1 save, a 3.86 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.  Cotts has pitched in 131 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Rangers (2013 and 2014) and he was 10-12 with 3 saves, a 2.84 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.  Cotts has now pitched in 483 games (5 starts) in his first 10 years in the show and he is 21-24 with 4 saves, a 3.96 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  I like this signing for the Rangers, as Cotts could help them later this year.

The Texas Rangers have placed 29-year old righty starting pitcher Yu Darvish back on the 15-day disabled list due to neck and shoulder problems.  Darvish has pitched in 3 games (all starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 2.87 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.  He has given up 12 hits and 6 walks while whiffing 19 batters in his first 15 2/3 innings this year.  31-year old lefty Cesar Ramos will replace Darvish in the starting rotation.  Ramos has pitched in 7 games (3 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 1-2 with 1 save, a 3.58 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP.  The Rangers have called up 24-year old lefty reliever Alex Claudio to replace Darvish on the active roster.  Claudio pitched in 10 games (0 starts) earlier this year for the Rangers and he was 1-1 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP.  The Rangers hope that Darvish only has to miss a couple of weeks.

Ryan Rua is likely to start losing a lot of playing time for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Monday 13 June 2016 at 8:56 am

26-year old righty swinging outfielder Ryan Rua has really stepped up for the Texas Rangers in 2016.  But, he is going to start losing P.T. starting today when the Rangers activate 33-year old lefty swinging outfielder Shin-Soo Choo from the D.L.  Rua has played in 41 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 35 of 123 (.285 avg, .818 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 4 homers, 13 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Choo has played in 9 games in AA+AAA-ball on his two rehab assignments so far this year and he is 12 of 31 (.387 avg, 1.021 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Choo has only played in six games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 3 for 16 (.188 avg, .646 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base.

UPDATE:  The Rangers have sent 27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jared Hoying back to AAA to open a roster spot for Shin-Soo Choo.  Hoying has played in 11 games for the Rangers so far this year and he is 5 for 23 (.217 avg, .497 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 3 RBIs.

Matt Bush is making up for lost time for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by joelapinski on Monday 13 June 2016 at 8:49 am

30-year old righty reliever Matt Bush has been really impressive so far this year for the Texas Rangers.  He has pitched in 14 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  He has only given up 12 hits and 3 walks while whiffing 15 batters in his first 13 1/3 innings this year.  If Bush keeps pitching like he is right now, he is going to be trusted to pitch later in games for the Rangers.

The Texas Rangers release Ike Davis

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Sunday 12 June 2016 at 8:31 pm

The Texas Rangers have released 29-year old lefty swinging 1B Ike Davis.  Davis played in 39 games in AAA-ball for the Rangers this year and he was 38 of 142 (.268 avg, .786 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 4 homers and 25 RBIs.  Davis has played in 659 games in his first six years in the show and he is 493 of 2,062 (.239 avg, .748 OPS) with 258 runs scored, 81 homers, 290 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  Davis wasn’t out of work too long as the Yankees quickly signed him to a major league deal.  That being said, Davis was buried on the Rangers’ depth chart, so they essentially did him a favor by cutting him loose.
