The Texas Rangers have sent 28-year old righty reliever Shawn Tolleson to AAA.  Tolleson has pitched in 37 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 2-2 with 11 saves, a 7.68 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP.  He has given up 53 hits (8 homers) and 10 walks while whiffing 29 batters in his first 36 1/3 innings for the Rangers so far this year.  Tolleson has now pitched in 174 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the Rangers and he is 11-7 with 46 saves, a 3.84 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  Tolleson is already #10 in Rangers’ history with his 46 saves.  Tolleson has really lost it, as he was excellent in his first two years with the Rangers.  They hope he can get straightened out in AAA-ball and help the Rangers later this year.

The Texas Rangers DFA Kyle Lohse

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Tuesday 26 July 2016 at 6:51 pm

The Texas Rangers have designated 37-year old righty starting pitcher Kyle Lohse for assignment.  Lohse pitched in 2 games (both starts) for the Texas Rangers this year and he was 0-2 with a 12.54 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP.  He gave up 15 hits (4 homers) and 5 walks while whiffing 3 batters in only 9 1/3 innings for the Rangers, as he was hit really, really hard!  Lohse has now pitched in 457 games (418 starts) in his first 16 years in the show and he is 147-143 with 2 saves, a 4.40 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  It looks like Lohse could be at the end of the road as a Major League pitcher.

UPDATE:  (7/29/2016) – Kyle Lohse was rejected an outright assignment to AAA and he has become a free agent.

UPDATE:  (6/3/2016) – The Rangers have activated Shawn Tolleson and they have sent 24-year old lefty reliever Alex Claudio to AAA.  Claudio has pitched in 10 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP.

The Texas Rangers yank the closer role from Shawn Tolleson

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Wednesday 18 May 2016 at 3:18 pm

The Texas Rangers have yanked 28-year old righty reliever Shawn Tolleson from the closers’ role after he gave up a walkoff grand slam to Khris Davis of the Oakland A’s yesterday in a 8-5 loss!  Tolleson pitched in 137 games (0 starts) for the Rangers in his first two years with the team (2014 and 2015) and he was 9-5 with 35 saves, a 2.88 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.  All 35 of those saves came in 2015 for the Rangers.  But, this year…..he has stunk it up…..BIG TIME!  Tolleson has pitched in 18 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 0-2 with an American League leading 11 saves, a 9.20 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP.  He has given up 23 hits (5 homers) and 5 walks while whiffing 11 batters in his first 14 2/3 innings this year…..as he has been getting hit really hard so far this year!  28-year old righty Sam Dyson will get the next shot to close for the Rangers.  Dyson has pitched in 20 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 0-1 with 2 saves, a 1.89 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.  Dyson has given up 15 hits and 6 walks while whiffing 13 batters in his first 19 innings this year!  Dyson has now pitched in 51 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Rangers and he is 2-2 with 4 saves, a 1.43 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP!  I think Dyson will do a solid job for the Rangers.

Tom Wilhelmsen has been absolutely awful so far this year for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Sunday 17 April 2016 at 10:12 am

When the Texas Rangers traded Leonys Martin to the division rival Seattle Mariners over the winter for 32-year old righty reliever Tom Wilhelmsen, they thought they were getting a late game reliever to help the pen.  He pitched in 53 games (0 starts) for the Mariners last year and he was 2-2 with a 3.19 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP.  So on the surface, the deal made a lot of sense for the Rangers, but it just hasn’t worked out so far this year.  Wilhelmsen has pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 22.50 ERA and a 3.75 WHIP.  He has given up 12 hits (4 homers), 10 runs (all earned), walked 3 batters and he has hit one batter in only 4 innings pitched this year.  The Rangers are going to have to cut ties with Wilhelmsen if this continues much longer.

The Texas Rangers release Donnie Veal

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Monday 11 April 2016 at 11:12 am

The Texas Rangers have released 31-year old lefty reliever Donnie Veal.  Veal pitched in 5 games (0 starts) for the Atlanta Braves last year and he was 0-0 with a 14.54 ERA and a 2.31 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 105 games (0 starts) in his first five years in the show and he is 3-3 with 1 save, a 5.48 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.  It’s too bad that Veal hasn’t really learned how to pitch, because he has a really live left arm.

The Texas Rangers’ bullpen has been downright awful so far in 2016

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by joelapinski on Thursday 7 April 2016 at 1:35 pm

The Texas Rangers‘ bullpen has been downright awful so far this year.  The Rangers have used 7 relievers so far this year and they are a combined 0-2 with 1 save, a 15.75 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP!  They have combined to give up 17 hits, 3 walks and 14 runs (all earned) in their first 8 innings while whiffing six batters.  I know it’s really early in the season, but I could see roles changing soon in the pen if the guys that are struggling don’t straighten out soon.

The Texas Rangers yank Scott Feldman from the starting rotation

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by chinmusic on Tuesday 18 September 2012 at 12:43 pm

The Rangers have taken 29-year old righty starting pitcher Scott Feldman out of the starting rotation. Feldman has pitched in 26 games (20 starts) so far this year for the Rangers and he is 6-11 with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. Since August 1st, Feldman has started 8 games for the Rangers in which he is 1-5 with a 6.20 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. The Rangers will replace Feldman in the starting rotation with 21-year old rookie lefty Martin Perez. Perez has pitched in 9 games (3 starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. This is a lot of pressure to put on the kid, but it was the right move based in how poorly Feldman was pitching.

Yu Darvish has been pathetic lately for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by chinmusic on Thursday 2 August 2012 at 8:20 am

25-year old righty starting pitcher Yu Darvish has been awful lately for the Texas Rangers. Since July 1st, Darvish has started 5 games in which he is 1-3 with a 6.82 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. He has now pitched in 20 games (all starts) overall this year and he is 11-7 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. The Rangers invested a lot of cash in Darvish last winter, so they are going to need him to step up and be the pitcher they thought he was going to be when they signed him.

The Texas Rangers remove Roy Oswalt from the starting rotation

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Pitching BP by chinmusic on Tuesday 31 July 2012 at 5:14 pm

The Rangers have removed 34-year old righty Roy Oswalt from their starting rotation. He will now be the long man in the bullpen. Oswalt has pitched in 6 games (all starts) for the Rangers so far this year and he is 3-2 with a 6.49 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. He has given up 54 hits (7 homers) in only 34 2/3 innings this year while also walking only 6 batters and whiffing 29. This makes sense as Oswalt has been getting hit really hard since the Rangers brought him up.
